I've been reading and following links all morning about food waste in the disposal vs. food waste sent to the landfill. It seems to be an issue people are passionate and opinionated about. But I cannot figure out which is the lesser of two the two evils. It seems to be bad either way. Food waste in the landfill builds horrible levels of methane and other chemicals, plus there is the fuel it takes the trucks to move it all there. Food waste in the water waste is also problematic depending on how it is treated and where it ends up. If it dumped into the ocean it can cause horrible problems there too. ARGH!
So it looks like the solution is to buy as little as possible, beware of excess packaging, eat as much locally produced food as you can if you can't grow it yourself. I will continue to let small things down the disposal and try to find out more clearly how solid waste is handled here in my city.
