My second draft was ~87,000 words. I need to bring in this draft closed to 70,000 (which is at least 1,000 words or so chopped out of every chapter.) I need to find focus, clarity, keep the point of the story uppermost. I have to break up expository bits into stronger scenes. And above all I have to trust that my reader is smart and is having a good time putting together this puzzle and doesn't need to be spoonfed a story. *facepalm*
The I Ching told me to "stay low" and not overshoot my goal if I want to be sucessful. I am not making major plot arc changes in this rewrite. I'm focusing and deepening the story. I need to get into poor Allie's very uncomfortable head and POV more deeply. I foresee more crying in public if I am successful. \o/
I so want to plough ahead and bang out 2,000+ words a day like I did during the last rewrite. But I have to go more slowly--and shape these scenes more carefully. This is the fine work, the details and I can't rush them. :/ I'm so impatient--but I can do this. I think.
