imaginarycircus: (ned and emerson)
When I was in college in Santa Fe I missed autumn in New England and I told my mother that on the phone. She was in the hospital in Connecticut and we knew she was probably terminal at that point, but she was hoping some experimental drug or procedure might buy her extra time. The day after we spoke she was allowed to go home and she sent my father to the farm stand for apples and sent my brother out in the yard to find pretty autumn leaves. She sent me a package containing autumn at home. I think that might be the single sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me. And I remembered it today when I was walking to the coffee shop, but I have no idea what brought it to the surface. It's very definitely autumn here in Cambridge, but it's also turned very cold and gray.
