Today was the worst 4th of July I have ever had. It was cool, almost cold. It rained. David and I had a fight. I was very sick. And the only fireworks I saw were on TV, and were in Boston. That made me kind of homesick. And it reminded me of sitting on a roof with [livejournal.com profile] praetorianguard and [livejournal.com profile] elements a long time ago and watching the fireworks over the Charles.

I'm not feeling patriotic or at all proud of anything. I feel whiny and ill.

On the positive side? I finished reading Susan Orlean's The Orchid Thief and I kind of loved it. Then I watched Adaptation and it was crazy and I kind of loved it too. Though it helped that I just finished a screen writing course and got all the fuss over McKee. I kind of love Charlie Kaufman.

I hope everyone had a better day than I did, though I suppose mine could have been worse and I should just shut up already.

My holiday ended well, but I felt headachey and tired all day. I took two naps. I'm reading "The Liar's Club," a rather depressing (if fascinating) memoir, which didn't really help me feel like celebrating the holiday.

Oh, I read that. Totally weird and disturbing, but fascinating. I met Karr last year when she came to my grad school program to give a talk. She made me nervous.

How interesting! How did she make you nervous?

I dunno. She was weird and kind of intense. She just had weird energy that made me anxious.

I can totally see that, after reading "The Liar's Club"!

Yeah, she is pretty much what you would expect. :)

YES!!! I kind of thought she might cut me or something.

Thanks. At least if we had been in Boston we would have had friends and family around. Here we have no one except our cat and he is just happy when we give him shrimp.

Did you read the book? Because it is also awesome. And I can see exactly how Charlie Kaufman ended up writing what he did.

Nope. I didn't read the book. Yet. :p

But the screenplay = love. Lots and lots of love. :D

The book is great. It is non-fiction and meandering and full of cool ideas. But it contains a lot of info about the history of Florida and about the history of orchids. It is so different from the movie. When Kaufman says he can write a move based on the book, he was correct. What he did? OMG GENUIS! Killing off your imaginary twin brother?? YAY!

the movie is just so...meta! And you know my ♥ for metafiction! :)

Yeah, my eye sometimes sneaks a look at the book but then my stupidity filter kicks in screaming "THIS MIGHT BE INFORMATIONAL!" and makes me run away.

posted by [identity profile] imaginarycircus.livejournal.com at 06:03pm on 05/07/2007
Yeah, but a lot of it is informational in a crack sort of way. Like, wow I can't believe these scams, or people thought introducing these weird animals or plants into Florida was a good idea. The history of orchid hunting is amazing.

See? Now you're making part of my brain WANTS it, my precious, while the other portion is screaming "no! no! Too much potentially useful informations! Re-read OotP and HBP instead since DH is coming out! See!? SHINY!"

*weepts*

Oh, reread the HP books first yes. And read DH and then when you don't know what to read in August - read The Orchid Thief. It is not a page turner the way a novel is. But I found it deeply thoughtful, compelling, and provocative.

I was in Vegas for the 4th, and it was wicked hot. There were no fireworks because it was so hot. Boo to Vegas!!

That's what I'm thinking. I can't find any confirmation of this on the internets so far, but people were talking about it in the bathroom of the MGM Grand. We went to bed early that night, around 10pm or so lol. However, the night wasn't a total bust! We had dinner at Diego at MGM, a Mexican restaurant that was pricier than we expected but still worth it. I had a strong (strong for Ms. Lightweight here lol) dirty martini beforehand though, so after I had my margarita, I was drunk. It was an interesting dinner lol.

Martinis can be light? Dude, they are nothing but alcohol?! You=silly. <3's. Sounds like you had a much better 4th than me. yay! I want everyone to have had a better 4th than me.

:P I'm just saying that I'm sure that other people could handle that one dirty martini better than I could! I seriously spent most of that dinner drunk. *facepalm* The place was so fancy and red! Felt very trendy. The waitress put my cloth napkin on my lap as soon as I sat down. Jeff saw this odd gesture, and immediately put his napkin on his own lap lol. Trendy restaurants are bizarre!

I love restaurants that fold your napkin when you use the bathroom. When you return it is all folded up on the table and not crumbled up on the chair. hee!

I want to go to a restaurant where, when I go to the bathroom, secretly fold my napkin into an animal! When I went on a Disney cruise in high school, they would fold a towel in your state room into an animal or disney thing. It was cute. :D

posted by [identity profile] imaginarycircus.livejournal.com at 07:36pm on 06/07/2007
hmmmm... I could do without that. Though I did used to love it when fancy places made your doggie bag look like a swan.

Oh wow. How does one do that?

ps: I'm soooo bored at work right now it's ridiculous.

I was sitting on the Mem Drive side of the river so you were watching me, sorta, if they ever showed that part of the crowd. I told the story of that time we watched from the roof deck to the folks I was with, actually, so you were sort of there. :)

posted by [identity profile] imaginarycircus.livejournal.com at 04:14am on 07/07/2007
That was such a weird night. I really thought there might be a fight or someone might fall off the roof. Beer pong must be the dumbest game this side of Russian roulette.

Oh, I only saw the fireworks and not any shots of the crowd. I did wonder if you were there somewhere watching though. :D

Yeah, our roof deck felt OK but I was scared for the people on the decks without railings. Eek.

I wouldn't really imagine they'd show the mem drive side of the crowd anyway. Especially not with evetyhting all rainy. Didn't get too wet tho.
