book I, draft iii:

Zokutou word meterZokutou word meter

(13.3%)

It looks like I didn't make much forward progress in word count today. But really I had an enormous breakthrough about how to hang disparate sections of the narrative together. How to integrate them. I think the whole novel will hang together better and the pieces fit together like teeth on turning gears (I think).

So I actually cut out some things and wrote new parts/scenes. I'm pleased. I feel optimistic about the third draft for the first time since I started it.

Cambridge is filling back up with students. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Ugh. Kids.
There's a reason I make it a point to be out of Boston over Labor Day, and they would be it.

Margaritas?

Yay for progress!

Cambridge is filling back up with students. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Insert "Chapel Hill", and I completely agree.

I think it is mostly grad students at this point, but yeah. They are all buying garbage cans and wandering around looking lost.

Progress is good, even if it doesn't immediately produce something tangible!

Hell, when I was a college student and would spend the summers at Oberlin, I'd get really defensive when people started coming back for the school year, in a "this is my town" way.

With MIT and Harvard in addition to other small colleges in this town I'm used to sharing but the first sign of influx always catches me off guard. We live in a neighborhood full of grad students and they are the first to arrive.
