two steps back for almost nothing forward--in theory
book I, draft iii:
It looks like I didn't make much forward progress in word count today. But really I had an enormous breakthrough about how to hang disparate sections of the narrative together. How to integrate them. I think the whole novel will hang together better and the pieces fit together like teeth on turning gears (I think).
So I actually cut out some things and wrote new parts/scenes. I'm pleased. I feel optimistic about the third draft for the first time since I started it.
Cambridge is filling back up with students. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

There's a reason I make it a point to be out of Boston over Labor Day, and they would be it.

Insert "Chapel Hill", and I completely agree.

Hell, when I was a college student and would spend the summers at Oberlin, I'd get really defensive when people started coming back for the school year, in a "this is my town" way.
