We'll be spending the day with our nieces to celebrate the little one's 4th birthday and I said I'd make cupcakes and bring stuff to decorate them. I'm going to bake vanilla cupcakes and make chocolate buttercream. But what should I bring to put ON the cupcakes besides frosting?

Smarties tend to bleed when they get damp or oily. You could use M&Ms but I think they make the cake taste weird.

You could make chocolate curls, though...the kids might like it.

I definitely vote for multi-colored little ball sprinkles. Nothing looks cuter on the chocolate frosting. Sprinkles will be better than jimmies, as well. I even keep a container of this kind of sprinkle on hand specifically for putting on a specific chocolate brownie recipe I have and if I made cupcakes more frequently they would go on there, too.

Once I made a chocolate cake/pudding thing that was supposed to look like mud and I put gummy worms in it and the kids were so grossed out they wouldn't eat it. :P

I usually put colored sprinkles or the tiny ball sprinkles, whatever those are called.

DIRT CAKE!! We did that once and it was hilarious and everyone enjoyed it but we were all adults.

Mmmm...butter cream frosting. Now I am craving frosting. *googles recipe* Oh, look, I have everything I need to make it from scratch! I have nothing to make cupcakes with, though.

Eating frosting all by itself when you're snowed in for the next week isn't weird, right???

Nope. Though I would get some cake or something. Do you have eggs and sugar at least? Meringues are awesome with buttercream.

As it turns out I think they want to go out for lunch so no cupcakes. :(

Is this "they" the adults or the 4-year-olds? I hope it's the adults, because a 4-year-old who doesn't want cupcakes makes me worry.

The adults. But maybe my b-i-l will say to bring the cupcakes with me. :D

My niece and nephew love decorating cupcakes. They like decorating them more than eating them.
They love sprinkles or other really small candies like that.

They are 4 and 5 years old.

Our nieces are 4 and 6 so they are probably the same. :D I haven't done this with them before, but I imagine they will have a blast!

Yes they love it. They go a bit over board but that is half the fun right? They use the sugar sprinkles (sparkley sugar) that is colors too.

I voted for three things.

Why wasn't there a box for "You should also save me a cupcake or three?" :P

I love love buttercream frosting, but it may be too rich for a young kid.
