David's friend is coming to see us for the weekend and I am supposed to plan stuff for us to do because David has no time to do anything with his 14 hour work days. And he is not the greatest at planning things like this. Normally I'm OK at planning, but I feel sort of bored by my plans. I live on the edge of nyc but I hardly ever get out of the house, besides for school. And when I do get out I go to the same six places.

So tell me if this sounds like fun? I am making them a "menu" and letting them chose what we do. And we can be totally flexible about it all.

lunch (I'll give them options)
museum (their choice)
a walk in central park if anyone feels like it

After that we'll hop in the car and head downtown. David's friend is a nice Ultimate Frisbee playing guy. So I thought we'd swing by Pommes Frites for a snack and then wander over to the Burp Castle to have crazy beer in an etched bottle served to us by monks. When we feel so inclined we can head for dinner at any one of a number of places. They basically just have to tell me what they want to eat. Thai, Mexican, BBQ, Indian, and if they want to go to a slightly upscale place with a nice view we'll head to the Bridge Cafe.

On Sunday we can either laze around and have breakfast here. I make an awesome smoked salmon eggs benedict. Or we can grab bagels and have those with an omlet or something. Then maybe we'll go over to Wave Hill and walk around. They have a nice little cafe and you can look out at the Hudson River and the GWB.

Any suggestions?

Where is he coming from? If it's from a place this small, he might like going to a very off-off-off-Broadway show or even an independent film, because out here, we don't get much stuff like that.

Also, it's freaking pouring down rain here and that might be headed in your direction, FYI.

It is supposed to be nice here tomorrow. No rain predicted, I hope. They are coming from Boston and I can't imagine him wanting to go to a show of any kind. :D He likes beer, and frisbee, and games. If they want to do something else I am going to suggest bowling.

When Kathryn comes we are going to the Algonquin to have cocktails. And there will be a chocolate crawl.

If you came to visit me I would take you here:

I learned this the hard way: when entertaining people who've not spent much time in NYC and want to see it all...try to limit them to one area of town that has a bunch of interesting things to do. I think sometimes visitors think they want to see/do things all over the city, but they don't realize how big NY is and how long things take, and they get really overwhelmed (and grumpy). Might not be 100% applicable to your situation, since you have a car, but it's my new out-of-town-guest philosophy.

Right. Normally I would agree with you. But we will probably break it up into two neighborhoods because of the car. David always wants to drive. We will do museum row and then the east village. I think they've been here before several times. They probably just want to hang out and go wherever--but I feel like I should have some fabulous plan with nyc outside the door, of course that is silly.

Eh, I've lived here on and off for 36 years. I don't know why I feel so out of touch.

Huh it all sounds cool to me but I don't live there. And if you want to do something different I am totally fine with that - though I think I have to go to the Cowgirl Hall of Fame and the Frick. We could also wander around Greenwich Village or Soho or eat lunch at Les Halles (though I might be tempted to eat something you would find really gross). Central Park is always excellent for people watching and enjoying the weather. Really once you leave your place I'm sure you'll find lots to do. :D

Ii think that is a good plan. I'll meet you at the bus and we'll head over to the Algonquin for a drink and I think you can also get some food there, because I imagine you'll want something to eat. Although we can grab food somewhere else and then go for a drink. Or whatever.

Saturday we can pick from a long list of things to do and see and eat. I wish we had a week. Oh well. :D Also we can go to Jaques Torres were you can have free samples of all the chocolates. and and and

As long as it isn't grilled anus I won't care. You can eat all the scary organs and blood filled pouches you want. As long as I don't have to kiss you after. :D

There are so many places I want to take you. But I know you will like them and David's friend is a sweetheart, but he likes frisbee and board games and I have no idea what else.

Yes the cowgirl and the margaritas. yes. And the pet portrait store. There is a woman who paints pets in oil paint! Plus the Strand - over 18 miles of books! Kiehl's. Thai food. Dean & Deluca. Amazing pizza. OMG there is a place I am dying to take someone too.

We should go eat pizza then too! And all the other things. We don't need to sleep, right. We'll eat instead of sleep.

I don't do anus or blood things and I won't try to kiss you unless I drink the entire bottle of wine. :D

Well, I won't kiss David if he has been eating meat, except chicken. It just freaks me out. I don't care if he eats them. But I can't smooch him right after. So... that goes for everyone.

Well, we have a little more time since you arrive Friday night. I think it will all work out fine. Is Miss Liss coming too?

Sounds great to me, but then I'm such a bad tourist - just thinking of decent bagels and I'm ready to buy a plane ticket to go visit you (how I miss the freedom to travel!!)

It's hard to know what to do if you don't know what they're interested in. Some people love museums; others just want to eat out; some people just want to spend time with friends. Some people want to do everything, everything, everything. Some people don't know what they want to do until they've already visited a place once.

To actually say something helpful, and stereotyping wildly, I'd say the Burp Castle trip sounds very good for an ultimate-frisbee sort.

We already mentioned it to him and he was excited about that bit. I think they are just looking forward to hanging out with us and also to wandering around in nyc a bit.

I think I just need to relax. I get a little wound up when I feel responsible for visitors!
